Many municipalities in South Dakota, including Belle Fourche, Spearfish, Sturgis, Deadwood, and Lead are having local elections on Tuesday, April 8th. They are voting for city council members or commissioners, mayors, and school board members. Voting is an important right and responsibility of every citizen. So get out and make an informed vote and don't forget to include the kids. We have always discussed the topics and candidates being voted on with our kids and taken them with us when we go and vote. The oldest was excited to be able to vote in her first election.

Starting lessons on being civic engaged can start early. This book for young kids is about Moose and his friends. While walking through the forest, Moose wonders, Who owns the forest? He decides to ask his friends Fox and Rabbit. Together, the trio stumbles on the foundation of democracy... voting. Also the book is illustrated by a Spearfish teen, Casie Dale.
