Preserving the Legacy of Justice, Freedom, and Democracy
Lessons from The American Legion's Preamble

The American Legion’s Preamble states a noble mission: "To safeguard and transmit to posterity the principles of justice, freedom, and democracy." This declaration is more than just words; it is a responsibility - one that demands we honor the past while ensuring these ideals endure for future generations.
As a daughter of the Revolution, this mission holds deep personal significance. The sacrifices of those who came before us - who fought for independence, liberty, and the rights of all people - are the foundation of our heritage. Their courage and determination to secure justice and democracy were not just for their time, but for all who would follow.
Today, we carry this legacy forward. In our communities, we stand up for the values of freedom and justice. We educate, advocate, and engage to ensure that the principles our ancestors fought for remain strong. We support our veterans, champion civic responsibility, and pass on these ideals to the next generation.
As we reflect on our shared history, let us also look forward. How can we continue to protect and promote these principles in our everyday lives? How can we honor the sacrifices of the past by shaping a better future?
The answer lies in action. Whether through community service, active citizenship, or simply sharing these values with those around us, each of us has a role to play in preserving the ideals of justice, freedom, and democracy.
Let us rise to that challenge - just as those before us did - so that generations to come may inherit a world where these principles remain unshaken.
On a recent project we came across the The American Legion’s Preamble which is comprised of 10 clauses reflecting their "unwavering commitment to service, mutual support, and the ideals of peace and goodwill." The American Legion was formed by a federal charter in 1919 and according to their website, "is the largest U.S. veterans organization with more than 1.6 million members who strengthen the nation through programs, services and advocacy for those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, youth and communities."
Each of the ten clauses in their preamble are brief, but have a huge significance to their organization, the country and its citizens. You can read the preamble and interpretations of the clauses from their website, which is full of other information as well.
